UK Student Visa from Pakistan: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2026
To get a UK student visa from Pakistan, you need an offer and a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from a licensed UK university, a TB test certificate, and proof that you can pay your fees and living costs. You then apply online on GOV.UK and give your fingerprints and photo at a UK visa application centre in Pakistan. Weak money evidence and documents that don't match the CAS are common reasons for refusal, so careful preparation matters more than speed.
Based on official guidance from GOV.UK (Student visa). Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.
Key points
- The visa is called the UK Student visa (it replaced the old "Tier 4" visa).
- Your most important document is the CAS from a licensed student sponsor.
- Pakistani applicants need a TB test certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic.
- You must show money for your course fees and living costs, held in your own or your parents' account for the required period.
- You give biometrics at a UK visa application centre in Pakistan, including one in Islamabad (GOV.UK shows the available centres when you book).
- If approved, you usually get an eVisa (a digital status) rather than a passport sticker.
This guide from IVS – Islamabad Visa Services explains each step in simple English, based on what students from Islamabad and Rawalpindi ask us most.
Who can apply for a UK Student visa?
You can apply if you are 16 or older, you have an unconditional offer from a licensed UK student sponsor, you can show enough money, and you can speak, read, write and understand English. If you are under 18, you also need your parents' consent. The full rules are on the official GOV.UK Student visa page.
One practical tip: university admission policies for international students can change. Before you pay a deposit, confirm in writing that the university is accepting applications from Pakistan for your course and intake.
UK student visa documents checklist
GOV.UK lists the documents you must provide on its Student visa documents page. For most Pakistani students, the file includes:
- A valid passport (and old passports, if you have travel history).
- Your CAS reference number and the CAS statement from your university.
- Bank statements or other proof of funds (your own or your parents').
- If the money is in a parent's account: proof of relationship, such as your birth certificate (many students add a NADRA Family Registration Certificate as extra proof), and a consent letter from the parent.
- Your TB test certificate.
- The academic documents listed on your CAS (for example Matric, FSc or A-level results, degree and transcripts).
- Your English test result, if your CAS says you used one.
- An ATAS certificate, if your course needs one (some postgraduate science and engineering subjects).
- Certified English translations of any document in Urdu or another language.
Pakistani applicants should expect to submit full financial and academic evidence, so keep originals and clear copies ready.
How much bank balance do you need?
The Home Office sets the amount. You must show your first-year course fees (minus any deposit already paid, which appears on your CAS) plus a fixed amount for living costs. The living-cost amount is higher if you study in London. These figures change, so check the current amounts on GOV.UK, not an old social media post.
- The money must be held for a minimum period without dropping below the required level, and the statement must be recent. GOV.UK gives the exact rule.
- Money in an uncle's, brother's or friend's account is not accepted. Use your own account, or a parent's or legal guardian's.
- If you have an official scholarship or sponsor, you need a letter from the sponsor instead of (or as well as) bank statements.
- Be ready to explain where the money came from. Large, sudden deposits raise questions in university and Home Office interviews.
Do you need IELTS for a UK student visa?
Not always. For degree-level courses, many universities can assess your English themselves, for example from your previous studies, and this is shown on your CAS. Courses below degree level usually need an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI. The approved list can change, so check GOV.UK before you book a test.
How to apply for a UK student visa from Pakistan: step by step
- Get your offer. Meet all conditions so your offer becomes unconditional, and pay any deposit the university asks for.
- Pass the university's checks. Many UK universities hold a credibility interview with Pakistani applicants before they issue a CAS. Know your course, your university and your career plan.
- Get your CAS and check it. Your name, passport number, course, dates, fees and English evidence must match your documents exactly. Ask the university to correct any mistake before you apply.
- Take the TB test. Book a Home Office-approved clinic from the GOV.UK list of approved TB clinics in Pakistan. Islamabad has approved clinics. The certificate is only valid for a limited time, so plan it close to your application date.
- Prepare your money evidence. Make sure the funds meet the amount and the holding period before you apply.
- Apply online on GOV.UK. Fill in the form carefully and pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (check the current amounts on GOV.UK).
- Book your biometrics appointment. After you pay, GOV.UK directs you to the booking website of its visa application centre provider (at the time of writing this is VFS Global in Pakistan; always use the link GOV.UK gives you). IVS is independent and not linked to VFS Global or the UK government. Our UK visa appointment booking guide explains how the booking works.
- Attend any Home Office interview. Some applicants are invited to a short video interview. Answer honestly and in your own words.
- Get your decision. If approved, you usually receive an eVisa (a digital immigration status) that you view in your UKVI account, instead of a sticker in your passport. See the GOV.UK eVisa page for how this works, and check your eVisa details before you travel.
How long does a UK student visa take from Pakistan?
Processing time depends on the season and your case. The weeks before the September and January intakes are the busiest. Check the current processing time on GOV.UK, apply as soon as your CAS and documents are ready, and don't book non-refundable flights before you have a decision.
Can you bring your spouse or children?
In most cases, students on taught courses, such as a one-year master's, can no longer bring a spouse or children. Family members are usually only allowed for postgraduate research courses (such as a PhD) and for government-sponsored students on longer courses. Check the GOV.UK family members page before you plan. If your parents want to visit you later, see our guide to the UK visit visa invitation letter for parents.
Common mistakes that lead to refusal
- Funds that drop below the required amount, or are not held for the full required period.
- Details on the CAS that don't match the passport, certificates or bank letter.
- Weak answers in the credibility interview, such as not knowing your course modules or why you chose the UK.
- Not declaring a previous visa refusal from any country.
- Any fake or edited document. A deception finding can lead to a ban on future UK applications, so never use one.
What to do if you are refused
Read the refusal letter carefully. It explains the reasons and whether you can ask for an administrative review (if you think the caseworker made a mistake). Fix the problems first, speak to your university about your CAS, and only then reapply with a stronger, consistent file.
