Ireland Student Visa from Pakistan: How to Apply Step by Step
To get an Ireland student visa from Pakistan, you apply online for a long-stay "D" Study visa through AVATS on the Irish Immigration Service Delivery website. Then you hand in your signed summary form, passport and supporting documents where the form tells you. Your course must be on Ireland's list of eligible programmes, and you must show paid fees, enough money, private medical insurance and a clear reason for your studies.
Based on official guidance from Irish Immigration. Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.
Key points
- Pakistani citizens need a long-stay "D" Study visa for a full-time course in Ireland that lasts longer than three months.
- You apply online through AVATS (the Irish online visa system), then submit paper documents.
- Your course must be on Ireland's official list of eligible programmes (the Interim List of Eligible Programmes, or ILEP). The list and how it works can change, so check the current list on irishimmigration.ie.
- You usually must pay your fees (or a set part of them) to the college before you apply.
- You need proof of funds, private medical insurance and, for degree courses, proof of English.
- After you arrive, you register for an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) with Stamp 2 student permission.
This guide from IVS – Islamabad Visa Services explains each step in simple English for students in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and across Pakistan.
Is an Ireland visa a Schengen visa?
No. Ireland is in the European Union but not in the Schengen area. An Irish study visa does not let you live or study in Schengen countries, and a Schengen visa does not let you study in Ireland. If you also plan trips to Europe, see our Schengen visit visa guide and our Europe and Schengen visa assistance page.
Choose an eligible course first
For a study visa, your course must be full-time and on Ireland's official list of eligible programmes (the ILEP). The rules on which courses are eligible can change, so check the current list of eligible programmes on irishimmigration.ie before you accept an offer. Also ask your college to confirm in writing that your course is eligible for student immigration purposes. The official explanation is on the Irish Immigration third-level and language course page.
Choose a course that makes sense with your past studies and career. Officers look closely at whether the course is a logical next step for you.
Ireland student visa documents checklist
The full list is on the Irish Immigration long-term study visa page. Most Pakistani students need:
- Your current passport and copies of any old passports.
- The AVATS summary application form, signed and dated.
- Passport photos that meet the Irish visa photo rules.
- An application letter, signed by you, explaining why you want to study in Ireland, your course and your plans after you finish.
- Letter of acceptance from your college.
- Proof that you paid the required fees to the college.
- Evidence of academic ability: Matric, FSc or A-levels, degree and transcripts.
- For a degree course, evidence of English, such as an IELTS result your college accepts.
- Proof of funds: bank statements, a sponsor letter, the sponsor's income documents and proof of relationship (such as a NADRA FRC).
- Private medical insurance (unless your college arranged it and says so on your acceptance letter).
- A written explanation of any gaps in your education history.
- Details of any previous visa refusal from any country.
Irish Immigration accepts printed documents only. Do not send USB sticks, CDs or file-sharing links. Any document that is not in English (for example, in Urdu) needs a full certified English translation.
How much bank balance do you need?
Irish Immigration sets a minimum amount of money you must have for living costs in your first year. You must also show that you will have access to funds for the rest of your course. The amount can change, so check the current figure on irishimmigration.ie before you prepare your bank statements.
- Show a clear history of the money, not a sudden large deposit.
- The money must be available to you right away. Savings locked in a fixed deposit that you cannot withdraw may not be accepted.
- If a parent or relative is sponsoring you, include a signed sponsor letter, their bank statements and proof of their income.
- Keep the fee payment separate and show the college's receipt.
How to apply for an Ireland student visa from Pakistan: step by step
- Get your offer. Choose an eligible course and get your letter of acceptance.
- Pay your fees. Pay the amount Irish Immigration requires to the college and get a receipt.
- Arrange medical insurance. Do this yourself if the college has not arranged it.
- Prepare your funds and sponsor documents.
- Fill in AVATS online. Apply from Pakistan, or from the country where you live legally. Answer every question honestly. Print the summary form, then sign and date it.
- Submit your file. Pay the visa fee and hand in your summary form, passport and documents in the way your summary form explains. In Pakistan this is usually at a visa application centre run by a private company, where you may also be asked for fingerprints and a photo. IVS is independent and not linked to any Irish visa office or application centre.
- Wait for the decision. If approved, the visa is placed in your passport.
- Arrive and register. Carry your documents. The immigration officer at the airport decides whether to let you in. Then register for your IRP card with Stamp 2 permission.
When should you apply?
Check on irishimmigration.ie how early you can apply before your travel date. Processing times change through the year, so apply as early as the rules allow, especially for the September intake.
Common reasons for refusal
- The course does not fit your past studies, or gaps in your education are not explained.
- Funds are too low, or their source is not clear.
- Fees were not paid as required before applying.
- Missing medical insurance or missing documents from the checklist.
- Information that does not match across the form, letter and documents.
- Not showing that you plan to leave Ireland when your permission ends.
If you are refused, the letter explains the reasons. Ireland lets you appeal within the time limit stated in your refusal letter. Answer every reason with new evidence.
Can you work in Ireland as a student?
Yes, in most cases. Students on an eligible full-time course with Stamp 2 permission can usually work up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 40 hours a week in the official holiday periods. Work is meant to help with living costs, not to pay your fees, so do not count on it in your financial plan.
Can you stay in Ireland after your studies?
If you finish a qualification at level 8 or above (an honours bachelor's degree or higher) from a recognised Irish awarding body, you may be able to stay for a limited time to look for work. This is called the Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G). The rules can change, so check them on irishimmigration.ie before you choose your course.
Ireland, UK or Canada?
Many students from Islamabad compare Ireland with other English-speaking countries. If you are still deciding, read our UK student visa guide and our Canada study permit guide to compare the steps.
