Key Schengen rules for a Spain visa

• 90/180 rule: you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.
• When to apply: no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before your trip.
• Travel medical insurance: at least €30,000 of cover, valid in all Schengen countries for your whole stay.
• Passport: valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, and issued within the last 10 years.
• Processing: normally 15 days, but it can be extended (up to 45 days) if more checks are needed.
• Right country: apply to Spain if Spain is your main destination (where you spend the most nights), or your first entry if the time is equal.

Where Pakistanis apply for a Spain visa

Spain accepts visa applications in Pakistan through its official visa application centres in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, run by an outside service provider. • Completed and signed application form, and recent photos to Schengen specifications.
• Passport meeting the rules above, plus old passports with previous visas.
• Travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover.
• A return flight reservation (you don't need to buy the ticket before the visa is approved).
• Hotel bookings or an invitation letter for your whole stay, and a day-by-day itinerary.
• Bank statements for the last months, salary slips and an employment letter with approved leave.
• Business owners: registration and tax documents; students: an enrolment letter.
• A covering letter explaining your trip, who pays and your return to Pakistan.

Mistakes that lead to Spain visa refusals

• An itinerary that doesn't match the hotel bookings, or Spain isn't really the main destination.
• Insurance that doesn't cover the whole trip or the whole Schengen area.
• Funds that look borrowed: large deposits shortly before applying.
• Applying too late, after the 15-day deadline, or with a passport that expires too soon.

A sample itinerary that supports your application

Officers like a plan that makes sense. For example: 3 nights in Madrid, 3 in Seville and 4 in Barcelona, with hotels booked for each stop, trains between cities and a return flight from Barcelona. If you also visit another Schengen country, keep most of your nights in Spain so Spain stays your main destination.

Timeline: when to start

Summer is the busiest season for Schengen appointments. Start collecting documents 2 to 3 months before you want to apply, and remember the window: no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before your trip.

Before you fly: final checklist

• Printed and digital copies of your visa or approval email.
• Passport, plus old passports if they show useful travel history.
• Return ticket, hotel bookings and travel insurance documents.
• Enough money or cards for your stay, and your host's contact details.
• Insurance certificate showing at least €30,000 cover for the whole Schengen area.
