UK Visit Visa Invitation Letter for Parents: What to Include (With Sample)
If your son or daughter lives in the UK and wants you to visit, their invitation letter is one of the most useful documents in your UK Standard Visitor visa application. It isn't a legal requirement, but GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents suggests a letter from the family member you're visiting, confirming the purpose and length of the visit, with copies of their immigration documents. Below is what a strong letter includes, a sample you can adapt, and the documents your host should send with it.

Is an invitation letter required for a UK visit visa?
No, not by law. The decision is made on your whole application. But when parents visit children in the UK, the officer needs to understand who you're visiting, why, for how long, where you'll stay and who pays. A clear letter from your host answers all of that on one page and ties the rest of your documents together.
What to include in the invitation letter
- The host's full name, date of birth, UK address, phone number and email.
- Their status in the UK: British citizen, settled, or the visa they hold (for example Skilled Worker or Student) and when it ends.
- Your full names exactly as in your passports, your passport numbers, and your relationship ("my father and mother").
- The purpose of the visit: seeing family, a grandchild's birth, a graduation or a wedding.
- Your planned arrival and return dates. A Standard Visitor can stay up to 6 months, but the dates should match your real plan and your commitments in Pakistan.
- Where you will stay, usually the host's home, and that there is room for you.
- Who pays for flights, food and daily costs: you, the host, or both.
- That you plan to return to Pakistan at the end of the visit, followed by the host's signature and the date.

Adapt this to your own facts. Never copy in details that aren't true: the officer checks the letter against your other documents.

Documents your host should send with the letter
- A copy of their passport photo page.
- Proof of their UK status: a British passport, or evidence of their visa or eVisa status.
- Proof of address: a council tax bill, tenancy agreement, mortgage statement or recent utility bill.
- If they are paying: recent bank statements and payslips (or business accounts) showing they can afford it.
- Proof of your relationship: your child's birth certificate or your NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC).
- For a special event: proof of it, such as the university's graduation invitation or a wedding card.
Your own documents still matter most
The letter supports your application; it doesn't replace it. You still need your passport and old passports, your own bank statements and income, and proof of what brings you back to Pakistan: work, business, property, pension or family here. See our full UK visit visa documents checklist.
When to apply
You can apply up to 3 months before you travel. For a Christmas visit, collect documents in September or October and apply as soon as your dates are fixed. For a birth or graduation, apply once the date is confirmed.
Common mistakes in invitation letters
- Dates in the letter that differ from your application form or flight booking.
- A host whose visa ends before your visit does.
- The host says they will pay, but no bank statements or payslips are attached.
- A generic letter copied from the internet, with no real details about your family or plans.
- Describing the visit as helping in the host's business: visitors cannot work in the UK.
