Which Schengen Country Should You Apply To from Pakistan?

Apply to the Schengen country that is your main destination: usually the one where you will spend the most nights, or where the main purpose of your trip is. If your stays are equal and there is no main purpose, apply to the country whose external border you will cross first. Getting this wrong is a common cause of delays and refusals, so this guide explains the rule with simple examples for travellers from Pakistan.

The rule in three steps

1. Visiting one Schengen country? Apply to that country.
2. Visiting several? Apply to your main destination: the country where you will stay longest, or where the main purpose of your trip is, such as a conference or a family wedding.
3. No main destination (equal stays and no main purpose)? Apply to the country whose external border you will cross first when you enter the Schengen area.

Examples

• 5 nights in Paris, then 3 nights in Rome: apply to France.
• 3 nights in Madrid and 3 in Barcelona, then 4 in Lisbon: that's 6 nights in Spain, so apply to Spain. Count nights per country, not per city.
• 4 nights in Amsterdam and 4 in Berlin, landing in Amsterdam, as a holiday: no main destination, so apply to the Netherlands, your first entry.
• A 3-day business conference in Munich, then 2 days sightseeing in Vienna: apply to Germany, your longest stay and the main purpose of the trip.

What counts as the "main purpose"?

Length of stay is the usual test, but purpose can decide it. If the reason for the whole trip is an event in one country, such as a conference, a trade fair or a family wedding, that country can be your main destination even if you spend a similar number of nights elsewhere. Say so clearly in your cover letter and include proof of the event, such as the conference registration or the wedding card.

Build an itinerary that makes the answer obvious

• Book a hotel (or show your host's address) for every night of the trip, country by country.
• Show how you move between countries: train tickets or flight reservations.
• Add a return flight to Pakistan from your last stop.
• In your cover letter, list the nights you will spend in each country, so the officer sees your main destination at a glance.
• Keep the same dates on the application form, bookings, insurance and leave letter from your employer.

Where and when to apply in Pakistan

• Apply to the embassy, consulate or visa application centre that handles your main destination's visas for Pakistan. Some countries are represented by another Schengen country here, so check the embassy's website first.
• You can apply up to 6 months before your trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before it. Summer is the busiest season, so book early.
• A short-stay Schengen visa covers up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Can you enter through a different country?

Yes. A uniform Schengen visa is valid for the whole Schengen area, so you can enter through any Schengen country. But your trip should still match the plan you gave the embassy. If your plans genuinely change after the visa is issued, keep proof of the reason and your new bookings, because border officers can ask about your trip.

Mistakes to avoid

• Choosing a country because its appointments are easier to get, when most of your nights are somewhere else.
• Hotel bookings, flights and a cover letter that point to different main destinations.
• Booking most nights in one country, then cancelling them after the visa is issued.
• Counting cities instead of countries when you work out the longest stay.
• Travel insurance that doesn't cover the whole Schengen area for your full trip, with at least €30,000 of medical cover.
