Schengen Visit Visa from Pakistan: How to Apply, Step by Step
To get a Schengen visit visa from Pakistan, you apply for a short-stay (type C) visa to the Schengen country where you will spend the most time — or, if your stays are equal, the country you will enter first. If you live in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, you usually apply in person in Islamabad (at the embassy or the visa application centre that country uses), give your fingerprints, and submit a file with travel insurance, an itinerary, proof of funds and a cover letter. The visa is for visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and it usually lets you travel across all Schengen countries.
Based on official guidance from the European Commission. Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.

- Where to apply: the country of your main stay (longest stay or main purpose). Equal stays: the country you enter first.
- When: the rules let you apply up to six months before your trip, although some embassies only open appointments closer to travel. Apply early, especially for summer.
- Must-haves: travel medical insurance, flight reservation, hotel bookings or invitation, bank statements and a cover letter.
- Each embassy has its own checklist. Always follow the official list of the country you apply to.
- Money: each country sets its own minimum funds. Check the embassy's checklist, and make sure your funds have a clear source.
In this guide, IVS – Islamabad Visa Services explains how to pick the right country and build a strong Schengen visit visa file, based on what applicants from Islamabad and Rawalpindi often ask us.
Which Schengen country should you apply to?
This is the most important decision in your application. Under the common Schengen rules explained by the European Commission's guide to applying for a Schengen visa:
- One country only: apply to that country.
- Several countries: apply to the country where you will spend the longest time (or that is the main purpose of your trip).
- Equal time in each country: apply to the country you will enter first.
Example: 6 nights in Paris and 3 nights in Amsterdam means you apply to France. 4 nights in Rome and 4 nights in Vienna, entering through Rome, means you apply to Italy.
Don't choose a country only because someone told you it is "easier". If your real plan is mainly another country, the embassy can reject or refuse your application for that reason, and it can also cause problems at the border or on future applications. Apply where your trip really is.

How to apply for a Schengen visit visa from Pakistan: step by step
- Fix your travel plan. Decide your dates and cities, then work out your main destination using the rules above.
- Download that country's official checklist. Each embassy publishes its own list. For France, use the France-Visas page for Pakistan; for Germany, the German Embassy Islamabad short-stay visa page.
- Fill in the application form. Some countries ask you to fill in the form online (France uses its France-Visas website, for example), and others use the standard Schengen application form. The embassy's page tells you which one to use.
- Book your appointment. Some embassies take applications directly, and some use a visa application centre run by a private company such as VFS Global. Germany, for example, has used its own online registration with a waiting list, so check the German Embassy's page for the current process. Book only through the system named on the embassy's website, and be careful of anyone who says they can sell you a slot. Our Schengen visa appointment booking guide for Pakistan explains more.
- Prepare your documents. Use the checklist below, plus anything extra your embassy asks for.
- Attend your appointment. Submit your file, pay the visa fee (check the current amount on the official checklist) and give your fingerprints. Some embassies also hold a short interview.
- Wait for the decision. Decision times vary by embassy and season, so check the embassy's page and apply early. Don't buy non-refundable tickets or pay for hotels in full before you have your visa.
Schengen visa documents checklist from Pakistan
Basic documents
- Passport valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, issued within the last ten years, with at least two blank pages
- Old passports with previous visas
- Completed and signed application form
- Recent photos that meet Schengen photo rules
- CNIC, Family Registration Certificate (FRC) from NADRA, and marriage certificate if married
Travel documents
- Travel medical insurance (see below)
- Return flight reservation (a reservation, not a paid ticket, is usually enough)
- Hotel bookings for every night, or an invitation letter and the host's ID or residence permit
- Day-by-day itinerary
- Cover letter
Financial and ties documents
- Personal bank statements for recent months (your checklist says how many) and a bank maintenance letter
- Employment letter with your position, salary and approved leave, plus salary slips
- Business owners: business registration, NTN certificate and FBR tax returns
- Students: enrolment letter and leave approval from the institution
- Property documents, if you have them
Some embassies ask for documents to be translated or attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check your country's checklist so you don't lose your appointment over one missing stamp.
Travel insurance: what it must cover
Travel medical insurance is required for every Schengen visit visa. Your policy must:
- Cover emergency medical care, hospital treatment and repatriation (return to Pakistan for medical reasons)
- Be valid in all Schengen countries
- Cover every day of your trip, matching your flight dates
- Meet the minimum cover set by the Schengen rules — your embassy's checklist states the amount
Buy it from an insurer the embassy accepts, and check that your name and passport number are spelled exactly as in your passport.
Itinerary and cover letter: how to write them
Itinerary
List each day with the city, the hotel and how you will travel between cities. Your itinerary must match your hotel bookings, your flight reservation, your insurance dates and your main destination. If most of your nights are in Spain, you should be applying to Spain.
Cover letter
Keep it to one page, sign it, and address it to the embassy you apply to. Include:
- Your name, passport number, job and employer or business
- Purpose of the trip and the countries you will visit
- Travel dates and your main destination
- Who is paying for the trip
- Why you will return to Pakistan (job, family, business, studies)
- A short list of the documents attached
When you arrive in Europe
A visa does not give an automatic right of entry. The border officer makes the final check.
The EU has been introducing the Entry/Exit System (EES), which registers non-EU travellers' photo and fingerprints at the border instead of stamping passports. Check the official EU EES page before you travel for how it applies to your trip.
Officers can ask about your trip and ask to see your return booking, hotel bookings, insurance and money for the stay. Carry copies in your hand luggage.
Common mistakes that lead to Schengen refusals
- Applying to a country that is not your real main destination
- Bank statements with sudden deposits and no explanation
- Insurance, hotel and flight dates that don't match
- Weak proof of your job, business or family ties in Pakistan
- Fake bookings or documents — these can lead to refusals and long-term problems
If you are refused, the embassy gives you a form with the reasons. You can usually appeal or reapply. Fix the reasons first, and declare the refusal honestly on future applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Schengen country should I apply to from Pakistan?
Apply to the Schengen country where you will spend the most time, or the one that is the main purpose of your trip. If you will spend equal time in each country, apply to the country where you will first enter the Schengen area.
What documents are required for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?
Most Schengen embassies ask for a valid passport, the signed application form, photos, travel medical insurance, a flight reservation, hotel bookings or an invitation, bank statements, and proof of your job, business or studies in Pakistan. Each embassy publishes its own checklist, so always follow the official list of the country you apply to.
Which Schengen country is easiest to get a visa from Pakistan?
No Schengen country is truly easy for Pakistani applicants, because every embassy checks your file carefully. Applying to a country that is not your real main destination can lead to a refusal, so apply where your trip really is and make your file strong.
How much bank balance is required for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?
There is no single amount, because each Schengen country sets its own minimum funds, usually based on how many days you stay. Check the official checklist of the country you apply to, and make sure your bank statements show a steady, clear source of money.
Is travel insurance mandatory for a Schengen visa?
Yes. A Schengen visit visa needs travel medical insurance that covers emergency treatment, hospital care and repatriation in all Schengen countries for every day of your trip, with at least the minimum cover stated on the embassy checklist.
Can an agent guarantee a Schengen visa?
No. Only the embassy of the country you apply to decides, and no agent can promise a visa or an appointment slot. IVS in Islamabad helps you choose the right country and prepare a complete, honest file.
