USA Student Visa from Pakistan: How to Apply for an F-1 Visa
To get a USA student visa from Pakistan (the F-1 or "F1" visa), you need admission to a SEVP-certified US school and a Form I-20. Then you pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa fee and attend an in-person interview at a US embassy or consulate in Pakistan that is currently offering visa interviews (such as the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad or the U.S. Consulate General in Karachi). Check pk.usembassy.gov for which posts are open. The consular officer mainly checks three things: that you are a genuine student, that you can pay for your studies, and that you plan to return after them.
Based on official guidance from the US Department of State (Student Visa). Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.
Key points
- The F-1 visa is for full-time academic study at a US university, college or language programme.
- Your school must be SEVP-certified and must issue you a Form I-20.
- You must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee before your interview.
- Every applicant completes the online DS-160 form, which also asks for the social media usernames you have used in the last five years.
- Almost all F-1 applicants, including students renewing a visa, must attend an in-person interview. Check pk.usembassy.gov for the current interview rules.
- Many F-1 refusals are under Section 214(b), which is about intent, funding and ties, not about one missing paper.
This guide from IVS – Islamabad Visa Services explains each step in simple English for students in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the rest of Pakistan.
Before you apply: choose the right school
Only schools certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) can issue an I-20. Check this with the "School Search" on Study in the States before you pay any application fee. Choose a programme that clearly fits your past studies and career plan. Officers often ask "Why this course?" and "Why this university?"
When your I-20 arrives, check it carefully. Your name must match your passport exactly, and the programme dates, estimated costs and funding details must be correct. Sign it before your interview.
F-1 visa documents checklist
The official process is explained on the US Department of State student visa page. Carry these to your interview:
- A valid passport (check the validity rule on travel.state.gov) and any old passports.
- Your signed Form I-20.
- The DS-160 confirmation page.
- Your appointment confirmation and visa fee receipt.
- Your SEVIS I-901 fee receipt.
- One photo that meets US visa photo rules, if asked.
- Academic documents: Matric, FSc or O/A-level results, degree and transcripts, and the test scores you used for admission (SAT, GRE, IELTS, TOEFL and so on).
- Financial documents: bank statements, your sponsor's income proof (salary slips, tax returns, business or property documents), and any scholarship or loan letter.
- Evidence of ties to Pakistan, such as family, property, a family business or a job offer for after your studies.
The officer may ask to see some of these papers, or none at all: decisions often depend mainly on your answers. Keep your papers organised so you can show the right one quickly if asked.
How to apply for a USA student visa from Pakistan: step by step
- Get admission and your I-20. Your school registers you in SEVIS and sends the I-20.
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee. Pay it on the official site linked from Study in the States (US Department of Homeland Security) and keep the receipt. Check the current fee there.
- Fill in the DS-160. Answer every question honestly. Your answers must match your I-20 and documents. The form asks for the social media usernames you have used in the last five years, so list them all.
- Pay the visa fee and book your interview. Use only the official appointment system linked from the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan website. Never pay anyone who offers to sell you an interview slot. Our US visa appointment booking guide explains this step in detail.
- Prepare for the interview. Practise short, clear answers about your course, funding and plans.
- Attend the interview. Students from Islamabad and Rawalpindi usually attend at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad. Arrive on time and check which items are allowed inside.
- After the interview. You may be approved or refused, or your case may need administrative processing (you may get a 221(g) letter asking for more information). If you are approved, the embassy keeps your passport to print the visa and tells you how to collect it.
Apply early. A student visa can be issued well before your programme starts, but new students can enter the US only a short time before the start date on their I-20. Check the exact rule on the travel.state.gov student visa page.
Recent US student visa changes to know about
- The US Department of State has asked student visa applicants to make their social media profiles public. Check the current instruction on the travel.state.gov student visa page before your interview.
- Visa appointments in Pakistan can be paused or cancelled at short notice, for example for security reasons. Read the latest notices on the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Pakistan website before you plan dates.
- If you hear about a US visa pause, check whether it covers student visas or only immigrant (green card) visas. Confirm the current position on the U.S. Embassy website before you apply.
- The US government has proposed replacing "duration of status" with fixed admission periods for F-1 students. Whether and when this applies may change, so check the latest position on Study in the States and with your university's international office.
How much bank balance do you need for an F-1 visa?
There is no single bank balance figure for every Pakistani student. Your I-20 shows the estimated cost of one academic year (tuition plus living expenses). You must show funds or sponsor income that clearly cover at least this amount, and ideally a plan for the later years too.
- Show a clear and lawful source of money, such as salary, business income or property.
- Avoid large, sudden deposits that you cannot explain.
- Know your sponsor's job and income. Officers often ask, "Who is paying, and what do they do?"
F-1 interview tips
- Know why you chose this university, this course and the US, rather than studying in Pakistan or another country.
- Explain your funding confidently and simply.
- Describe a realistic career plan in Pakistan after your degree.
- Speak for yourself in clear English. Don't recite a memorised script.
- Make sure every answer matches your DS-160 and I-20.
For more on the interview itself, see our US visa interview tips for Pakistanis. It is written for B1/B2 visitors, but the advice on honest, short answers applies to students too.
What is a 214(b) refusal?
Section 214(b) is the part of US law behind many F-1 refusals. It means the officer was not convinced you qualify as a temporary student, often because of unclear funding, weak ties to Pakistan, or answers that did not fit your profile.
It is not a ban. You can reapply, but it usually only makes sense when something important has changed, such as stronger funding evidence, a clearer study plan or a better-fitting programme. You will need a new DS-160 and a new visa fee.
Can you work on an F-1 visa?
Only in limited ways. F-1 students can usually work on campus within limits, and off campus only with authorisation such as CPT or OPT. Don't plan to pay your fees from work income: the officer wants to see that you can pay without working.
