No. As of October 2026, there is no US ban on visit (B1/B2) or student (F-1) visas for Pakistani citizens. Pakistan is not one of the 39 countries in the US travel ban that started on 1 January 2026, and the pause that did include Pakistan from 21 January 2026 was for green-card visas only. Visa appointments were cancelled for a while in March 2026 for security reasons, as reported, but interviews have since restarted. What has changed is the process: nearly every applicant now needs an in-person interview, and interview waits in Islamabad are long.

So if a relative told you "America ka visa band hai", you can still apply. We're IVS – Islamabad Visa Services in F-10 Markaz, and below we take each 2026 headline in turn: what it covered and what it means for parents and students.

Based on official guidance from the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Pakistan, and on news reports where we say so. Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.

Key points

  • Pakistan is not on the US travel-ban list that took effect on 1 January 2026 (Presidential Proclamation 10998, as reported).
  • The pause from 21 January 2026 covered green-card visas for Pakistanis. Visit and student visas were not part of it.
  • Reports in August 2026 say Pakistan is not on the US visa-bond country list.
  • In March 2026 the embassy cancelled visa appointments for security reasons, as reported. Interviews are being held again.
  • Since the 2025 rule changes, nearly every applicant needs an in-person interview, young children and older parents included.
  • Apply in Pakistan, or in the country where you legally live.

US visa ban Pakistan: myth vs fact

Some of the confusion comes from headlines that mixed up separate US measures, and some from a real but temporary stop to visa appointments in March 2026.

What you may have heardWhat's true as of October 2026
"The US has put a travel ban on Pakistan."Pakistan is not among the 39 countries in the travel ban that began on 1 January 2026 (Proclamation 10998, as reported).
"US visas for Pakistanis are suspended."The pause from 21 January 2026 did include Pakistan, but the US Embassy's notice limits it to "immigrant visa" issuances: green-card visas. One report says it was lifted in August 2026. We couldn't confirm that officially, so check the notice on the day.
"The US embassy stopped visa interviews this year."For a while, yes. In March 2026 the embassy cancelled visa appointments for security reasons, as reported. Interviews have since restarted.
"Pakistanis now have to pay a visa bond."Reports in August 2026 (Dawn, Express Tribune) say Pakistan is not on the country list for the US visa-bond programme.
"My parents are elderly, so they won't need an interview."Since the 2025 rule changes, older applicants and young children generally need an in-person interview too.
"I'll book my interview in another country where the wait is shorter."Since 6 September 2025, you're expected to apply in your country of nationality or the country where you legally live.

The one real stop this year was temporary. In March 2026 the embassy cancelled visa appointments for security reasons, and the Karachi consulate restarted visa interviews from 20 July 2026, as reported. Interviews are being held again; check the embassy's latest consular update before you book.

What actually changed for visitors and students

Nearly everyone needs an interview

Since the 2025 rule changes, nearly every applicant has to attend an in-person interview at the embassy in Islamabad or the consulate in Karachi, from young children to parents in their eighties. Only a narrow group renewing a recently expired B1/B2 visa may qualify for a waiver. If someone says your father can "just drop off" his passport, check the conditions on the embassy site first.

Apply where you're a citizen or a resident

From 6 September 2025, you're expected to apply in your country of nationality or where you legally live. For most readers that means Islamabad or Karachi. A Pakistani who legally lives in Dubai or the UK can apply there, with proof of residence. Flying to a third country just to find an earlier date is generally no longer an option.

Students: social media and timing

F-1 applicants are asked to set their social media profiles to public, and the DS-160 asks for every account you've used in the last five years. Student interviews have their own line in the wait-time tool, separate from visitors. For the I-20 and SEVIS steps, see our USA student visa guide for Pakistani students.

Fees

News reports mention new US visa fees. Check the current amount on the State Department's visa fee page and in your appointment profile before you pay, not on a social media post.

What hasn't changed: the officer's main question

Under section 214(b), the officer starts by assuming you may not come back. Your answers and documents have to show a real trip and real reasons to return to Pakistan: your job or business, your family, your home. There's no fixed bank balance; your funds should match your income and your plans.

A 214(b) refusal isn't a ban: you can apply again once something real has changed. These mistakes often cause problems for Pakistani applicants:

  • DS-160 answers that don't match what you say at the window: travel dates, who pays, your job title.
  • Not declaring an earlier US visa refusal when the form asks.
  • Leaving a child in the US off the form, or giving the wrong status for them.
  • Buying non-refundable tickets before the visa is in your passport.

Free check of your DS-160 and file

Send us your DS-160 confirmation page (or your draft answers) and a list of your documents, with passport and account numbers covered. An IVS consultant will check that your form, documents and plans match, and tell you what's missing. Only the embassy decides; we make your file complete, consistent and honest. Parents visiting children in the US: start now for 2027

If your son or daughter studies or works in America and you want to be at a graduation in May or June 2027, or spend the summer with your grandchildren, start now. Islamabad waits for visitor interviews have been long this year, so check the current estimate in the State Department's visa wait-time tool today.

DS-160: questions about your children

  • The form asks whether you have immediate relatives in the US, such as children, and their status there. Give it exactly: US citizen, green-card holder, student or work visa.
  • Use the same names, addresses and dates your child puts in their letter to you.
  • Give the real purpose: a graduation, a new grandchild, a family visit. Visitors can't work in the US, so never describe the trip as a job.
  • Each parent needs their own DS-160, but you can usually book and be interviewed together.

Interview preparation for older applicants

The interview is short, and the officer asks you, not your child. Know where your child lives, what they study or do, how long you'll stay and who pays. Have a calm answer ready about what brings you home, whether that's your pension, your house, your other children or a shop in Rawalpindi. Short, honest answers matter more than perfect English, and if you don't catch a question, politely ask the officer to repeat it. Our US visa appointment guide lists what to bring on interview day.

A simple plan for May–August 2027

  • Now: renew your passport if it expires soon, complete the DS-160 and book the first suitable date. Our US visa appointment booking guide explains the profile and fee steps.
  • While you wait: log in now and then for an earlier date, and put your documents in order, including a short letter from your child with their address and status.
  • Emergencies only: for a funeral or urgent medical treatment, the embassy has its own expedited appointment request. It decides, and no agent can speed it up.
  • After the visa: book your flights. Not before.

Travelling as a tourist or for a business conference instead? The steps are the same; our USA visit visa guide lists the documents.

Kya America ka visa band hai?

Nahi. October 2026 tak Pakistanio ke liye America ka visit (B1/B2) aur student (F-1) visa band nahi hai. January 2026 wala pause sirf green-card visas ke liye tha. March 2026 mein security ki wajah se kuch arsa visa appointments cancel hui thin, lekin ab interviews dobara ho rahe hain. Farq yeh hai ke ab taqreeban har applicant ka interview hota hai aur Islamabad mein date der se milti hai, is liye DS-160 abhi se sach aur dhyan se bharein.
