USA Visit Visa from Pakistan: How to Apply for a B1/B2 Visa
To get a USA visit visa from Pakistan, you apply for a B1/B2 visitor visa: fill in the online DS-160 form, pay the visa fee, book an interview and attend it in person, usually at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad or the U.S. Consulate General in Karachi. The consular officer mainly checks one thing: is your trip genuine, and will you come back to Pakistan? A complete, honest file and clear answers at the interview matter more than anything else.
Based on official guidance from the U.S. Department of State. Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.

- Visa type: B1 is for business visits, B2 is for tourism, family visits and medical treatment. The visa is often issued as a combined B1/B2.
- Main form: the DS-160, completed online. Every answer must be true and must match what you say at the interview.
- Interview: under the current U.S. rules, almost all applicants in Pakistan, including children and older parents, need an in-person interview. Only a narrow group renewing a recently expired full-validity B1/B2 visa may be considered for a waiver. Check the U.S. Embassy Pakistan website for the current interview rules.
- Key test: you must show strong ties to Pakistan (job, business, family, property) that will bring you back.
- Money: there is no fixed bank balance. Your funds must be enough for the trip and must match your income.
This guide from IVS – Islamabad Visa Services explains each step in simple English, with the documents and interview tips our team in Islamabad shares with families from Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
What is the B1/B2 visitor visa?
The B1/B2 is a non-immigrant visa for short, temporary visits to the United States. According to the U.S. Department of State visitor visa page, it covers:
- B1 (business): meetings with business contacts, attending a business or professional conference, negotiating a contract.
- B2 (tourism): holidays, visiting family and friends, attending a wedding, or medical treatment.
You cannot work in the U.S. on a visitor visa. If your real plan is to study, you need a different visa — see our USA student visa guide for Pakistani students.
How to apply from Islamabad or Rawalpindi: step by step
- Check your passport. Make sure your passport has plenty of validity left beyond your planned stay. Check the exact passport validity requirement on the U.S. Embassy Pakistan website. If it will expire soon, renew it first, because your passport number goes on the DS-160. Keep your old passports too, because they show your travel history.
- Complete the DS-160. Fill it in on the official Consular Electronic Application Center (DS-160). Upload a recent photo that meets U.S. rules, note your application ID, and print the confirmation page with the barcode.
- Pay the visa fee. Check the current fee, any extra fees and the payment method on the U.S. Embassy Pakistan non-immigrant visa page. The fee is not refundable, even if the visa is refused.
- Book your interview. Use the official appointment system linked from the embassy website. If you live in Pakistan, plan to interview in Pakistan. In most cases U.S. rules expect you to apply in your country of nationality or residence; check the U.S. Embassy Pakistan website to confirm the current rule and which locations are taking visa interviews, as services can change at short notice. Our US visa appointment booking guide for Pakistan explains how the system works.
- Prepare your documents. Use the checklist below and keep everything in a simple folder, in order.
- Attend the interview. Arrive on time with your passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter and supporting documents. Check the embassy's list of items you cannot bring inside.
- After the interview. If approved, your passport is kept for the visa stamp and returned later. If the officer needs more documents or more checks, you may get a 221(g) letter (often called "administrative processing"). This is not a final decision. Follow the instructions on the letter.
DS-160 tips: avoid these common mistakes
The DS-160 is the base of your whole case. The officer reads it before you speak, so mistakes here can create doubts.
- Write your name exactly as it appears in your passport.
- Declare any previous U.S. visa refusal (and any refused entry or ESTA denial) exactly as the form asks. If the officer asks about refusals from other countries, answer honestly. Hiding a refusal is far worse than the refusal itself.
- List your past travel correctly, with dates that match your passport stamps.
- Give correct employer details, job title and income. Do not inflate your salary.
- List the social media accounts you have used in the last five years, where the form asks for them. Leaving accounts out can count as misrepresentation.
- Give the full U.S. address where you will stay, and the name of your host if you are visiting family.
Documents checklist for a USA visit visa from Pakistan
Required on the interview day
- Valid passport and all old passports
- DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
- Interview appointment confirmation
- Visa fee payment receipt
- Photo, if the embassy instructions ask you to bring one
Supporting documents (bring them, show them only if asked)
- Job holders: employment letter showing your position, joining date and approved leave, plus recent salary slips.
- Business owners: business registration, NTN certificate, tax returns and business bank statements.
- Finances: personal bank statements and a bank maintenance letter, plus property documents if you have them.
- Family: Family Registration Certificate (FRC) from NADRA and marriage certificate.
- Children: B-form (CRC) from NADRA, birth certificate and a letter from the school.
- Travel history: old visas for the UK, Schengen, Gulf countries or others.
- Family visits: invitation letter from your host and a copy of their U.S. passport, green card or visa status.
- Business visits: invitation from the U.S. company, or conference registration.
Officers often decide mainly from your answers and may not ask to see any papers. Still, well-organised documents help you answer with confidence.
Ties to Pakistan: what the officer is looking for
Under U.S. law (Section 214(b)), every visitor visa applicant is presumed to be an intending immigrant until they show otherwise. In practice, the officer wants to see that your life is in Pakistan and you have strong reasons to return. Strong ties include:
- A stable job or running business in Pakistan
- A spouse, children or parents who depend on you and stay in Pakistan
- Property, land or long-term financial commitments here
- Studies you will return to
- Previous international trips where you returned on time
Your money should tell the same story as your job. Large, sudden deposits that don't match your income raise questions. A steady account history is better than a big balance with no explanation.
US visa interview tips for Pakistani applicants
- Keep answers short and true. One or two clear sentences are better than a long speech.
- Know your own DS-160. Your answers must match what you wrote.
- Don't memorise a script. Officers can tell. Speak naturally about your own life.
- You don't need perfect English. Honest, consistent answers count more. If Urdu is easier for you, you can usually ask to speak in Urdu.
- Never use false documents or false answers. Misrepresentation can lead to a permanent ban from U.S. visas.
Common questions include: Why are you going? Who will you visit? How long will you stay? Who is paying? What do you do in Pakistan? Have you travelled before? Do you have relatives in the U.S.?
What if your US visa is refused?
The most common reason for a visitor visa refusal is Section 214(b). There is no appeal, but you can reapply with a new DS-160 and a new fee. Reapplying with the same file and the same answers usually gives the same result. Wait until something real has changed — a new job, a promotion, new travel history, or a clearer purpose — and declare the old refusal on every future application.

Frequently Asked Questions
What questions are asked at a US visit visa interview in Pakistan?
Common questions are why you are going, who you will visit, how long you will stay, who is paying, what you do in Pakistan, whether you have travelled before and whether you have relatives in the U.S. Keep your answers short, true and consistent with your DS-160.
How much bank balance is required for a US visit visa from Pakistan?
The U.S. does not publish a fixed minimum balance. You need to show you can pay for your trip, and your savings should match your income and job. Sudden large deposits without an explanation can raise doubts.
Is an invitation letter required for a US B1/B2 visa?
No, it is not mandatory. If you are visiting family, a letter from your host and a copy of their U.S. passport, green card or visa can support your purpose. The officer still decides mainly on your own ties to Pakistan and your answers.
Can I get a US visit visa if I have never travelled abroad?
Yes, first-time travellers can apply. Without travel history, your job, business, family and property in Pakistan carry more weight, so make sure these are clearly documented.
What does a 214(b) refusal mean for a US visit (B1/B2) visa?
It means the officer was not convinced that your trip is temporary and that you will return to Pakistan. There is no appeal, but you can reapply with a new application when your situation has genuinely changed.
Can an agent guarantee a US visa from Pakistan?
No. Only the U.S. consular officer decides, and no agent can promise a visa or an appointment date. IVS helps you prepare a complete, honest file and practise for the interview.
