To get an Australia student visa from Pakistan, you apply online in ImmiAccount for the Student visa (subclass 500) once your university has issued your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Your file also needs Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), proof of money and English, a health check, and honest answers to the Genuine Student questions in the form. For a February 2027 start, lodge as soon as your CoE arrives, and check the current waiting time on the official Home Affairs processing times page.

Based on official guidance from the Department of Home Affairs (Student visa subclass 500). Last updated October 2026. Visa rules, fees and waiting times change, so always confirm on the official site before you apply, or ask us on WhatsApp for the latest checklist.

Key points

  • The visa is the Student visa (subclass 500), for up to five years in line with your course.
  • You need a CoE from a registered Australian provider before you lodge.
  • You must hold OSHC health cover for your whole stay, unless you are exempt.
  • The Genuine Student questions ask about your life in Pakistan, your course choice and your plans.
  • Your evidence level decides which documents you upload; the official Document Checklist Tool shows it.

This guide from IVS – Islamabad Visa Services is written for students in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and across Pakistan.

What is the Australia student visa (subclass 500)?

It is the visa for full-time study in Australia, from a bachelor's or vocational course to a PhD. Your course must be on CRICOS, the official register of courses for overseas students. The government also sets a yearly planning level for new international students. Study Australia says it is a planning level, not a cap or limit on student numbers. Each university gets its own share of that number. Reports say that once a university uses up its share, new visa applications for it are still accepted but may take longer, though these settings have changed more than once. Check the current rules on Study Australia and the Home Affairs Student visa page, and lodge as soon as your CoE arrives.

How to apply for an Australia student visa from Pakistan: step by step

  1. Get your offer. Choose a course that follows from your studies or work, accept it and pay the deposit.
  2. Pass the university's checks. Many Australian universities test the Genuine Student points before they issue a CoE, sometimes in an interview.
  3. Get your CoE and check that your name, date of birth and passport number match your passport.
  4. Arrange OSHC. Buy it through your university or an approved insurer, covering the whole visa period.
  5. Write your Genuine Student answers (see below).
  6. Prepare your financial and English evidence using the Document Checklist Tool.
  7. Do your health check with a panel doctor approved by Home Affairs. You can arrange it before you lodge through My Health Declarations.
  8. Lodge in ImmiAccount with your own email address, so every letter reaches you. Reports say the fee has risen again; check it before you pay.
  9. Give your biometrics when the request letter arrives. Our Australia visa biometrics guide explains the Islamabad centre and what to bring.

The Genuine Student requirement: answering it from Pakistan

Since March 2024 the Genuine Student requirement has replaced the old GTE statement. You answer short questions inside the application form and upload documents that prove what you say. Behind every question is one test: are you really going to Australia to study?

What the questions ask

  • Your current circumstances: family, community, work and finances in Pakistan.
  • Why you chose this course, this provider and Australia.
  • How the course will help your future.
  • Anything else relevant, such as a study gap or an earlier refusal.

How to answer credibly

Study gaps. Gaps are common in Pakistan, and an officer can accept an explained gap far more easily than a silent one. Say what you did and prove it: an appointment letter and salary slips, family business papers, or a medical letter.

Course and career. Take a BS Computer Science graduate from Rawalpindi with two years in IT support, applying for a master's in cybersecurity. A credible answer names the job she wants afterwards, such as security work at a Pakistani bank or telecom company. It says which skills the course adds that her current job doesn't, and names a few real units. A weak answer says "Australia has world-class education" and stops. Show that you compared options, including similar programmes in Pakistan.

Ties. Explain what brings you back: parents in Islamabad, an employer holding your job, a family business or property. Back each one with a document, such as a NADRA Family Registration Certificate (FRC) or an employer's letter.

These are examples, not templates: copied wording reads as copied. Write about the course and the career you plan back in Pakistan, as in the example above, not about working in Australia or staying on after you graduate.

Get your file checked before you lodge

Before you press submit, send us your offer letter, CoE and a summary of your funds on WhatsApp, with passport and account numbers covered. A consultant will check whether your Genuine Student answers, money and documents tell the same story, and point out what is missing. Only the Department of Home Affairs decides; our job is to make your file complete, consistent and honest.

Evidence level and the Document Checklist Tool

Australia gives each country and each education provider an evidence level. Together they decide how much financial and English evidence you upload. Reports say the levels were updated for applications lodged from 27 March 2026, and guides online disagree about Pakistan's level. Don't rely on any of them. Enter your passport country and provider in the official Document Checklist Tool on the day you prepare your file. Even if it shows a short list, keep full funds and English documents ready: Home Affairs can ask for more at any time.

Proof of funds: what a Pakistani file usually needs

Home Affairs sets the amount you must show for fees, living costs and travel, and it changes. Check the current figure on the Student visa page, not in a WhatsApp forward.

  • If your parents pay, prove the relationship (FRC or birth certificate) and their income: salary slips, FBR tax returns, business or rental records.
  • Explain any large deposit. If it came from selling a plot or from crop income, keep the sale deed or land record and match it to the bank entry.
  • A bank education loan can count, with the bank's loan letter.
  • Money moved in from relatives' accounts just before you apply is a common reason for doubt.

Planning for the February 2027 intake

Most Australian universities start their first semester in late February or early March; your offer letter gives the exact date. Counting back from lodging in November or December:

  • October: offer accepted, deposit paid, the university's Genuine Student check done, English result in hand.
  • October to November: CoE issued, OSHC bought, health check done, funds documents collected and Urdu papers translated.
  • November to December: answers final, file checked, application lodged, biometrics given as soon as the letter arrives.
  • January to February: reply to any requests quickly, and book flights only after the grant.

Still waiting for an offer in late October? Ask the university whether the July 2027 intake is the better plan. A rushed file is a weak file.

Australia student visa refusals: what goes wrong

Reports in early 2026, including from The PIE News, said student visa refusal rates for South Asian applicants were high. Many refusals come from avoidable mistakes:

  • Copied Genuine Student answers, or answers that don't match your statement to the university.
  • Unexplained study gaps, or large deposits with no clear source.
  • Not declaring an earlier refusal from any country, including the UK or Canada.
  • Any false document. It can lead to refusal and stop you getting an Australian visa for years.

If you applied from Pakistan and are refused, you usually can't appeal; your refusal letter says whether you have any review rights. Fix every reason it gives before you apply again.

When your parents want to visit

For a graduation or holiday visit, parents apply separately for a Visitor visa (subclass 600), with their own documents from Pakistan. An invitation letter from you and proof of your enrolment can support their file, but they are not required on their own; the official checklist for their stream shows what to upload. See our Australia visitor visa 600 guide and Australia visit visa guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an Australia student visa take from Pakistan?

Waiting times change from month to month, so check the official Home Affairs processing times page instead of relying on social media. Lodge as soon as your CoE and documents are ready, and don't book non-refundable flights before your visa is granted.

What is the Genuine Student requirement for an Australia student visa?

It is the test, in place since March 2024, that checks whether you really intend to study in Australia. You answer short questions in the application form about your circumstances in Pakistan, why you chose the course and provider, and how the course will help you, and you back each answer with documents.

Can I get an Australia student visa without IELTS from Pakistan?

It depends on your course, your provider and your evidence level. The official Document Checklist Tool shows whether you must upload an English test result, and Home Affairs lists the tests and scores it accepts. Your university may also ask for one before it makes an offer.

Is there a cap on international students in Australia for 2027?

The Australian Government sets a yearly planning level for new international students. Study Australia says it is a planning level, not a cap or limit on student numbers. Reports say that once a university uses up its share, new visa applications for it may take longer, but these settings have changed more than once. Check the current rules on Study Australia and Home Affairs, and lodge as soon as your CoE arrives.

Can my parents visit me in Australia while I study?

They can apply separately for a Visitor visa (subclass 600), for example for your graduation. Their file needs their own documents from Pakistan, such as passports, funds and proof of ties. An invitation letter from you and proof of your enrolment can support the file, but they are not a requirement on their own; follow the official checklist for their stream.

Can an agent promise me an Australia student visa?

No — only the Department of Home Affairs decides. An honest agent can check that your file is complete, consistent and truthful before you lodge, and tell you what is missing. Be careful of anyone who says otherwise.
